Israel News:

THE IDF in the Gaza Strip have found a Hamas manual on “Urban Warfare,” which explains how the civilian population can be used against the IDF for propaganda purposes.

DF forces in the Gaza Strip found a Hamas manual on “Urban Warfare,” which belonged to the Shuja’iya Brigade of Hamas’ military wing, the Al-Qassam Brigades. The manual explains how the civilian population can be used against IDF forces and reveals that Hamas knows the IDF is committed to minimizing harm to civilians. [source]

Op-Ed: United Nations Says Israel to Blame When Palestinian Men Beat their Wives

We’re bringing you another delightful piece of info on the United Nations Human Rights Council.

Recently, we wrote about comments from UNHRC head Navi Pillay, who said Israel should share its Iron Dome missile defense system with Hamas.

If that wasn’t outrageous enough, we found a report from April in which this same woman stated that when Palestinian men beat their wives, Israel is to blame:

Women in the Occupied Palestinian Territory face multiple layers of violence and discrimination. The analysis made by the Special Rapporteur on violence against women in 2005 remains valid. She found that the combination of decades of Israeli occupation, the use of force against Palestinians by Israel, the different forms of resistance used by Palestinians against such use of force and the patriarchy prevailing in Palestinian society expose women to a continuum of violence in all spheres of life. Caution needed with Gaza casualty figures

The UN report carries a caveat with its figures: “Data on fatalities and destruction of property is consolidated by the Protection and Shelter clusters based on preliminary information, and is subject to change based on further verifications.”

There has been some research suggesting that men in general are more likely to die in conflict than women, although no typical ratio is given.

Nonetheless, if the Israeli attacks have been “indiscriminate”, as the UN Human Rights Council says, it is hard to work out why they have killed so many more civilian men than women. [source]

Iraq conflict: US steps up air strikes on IS militants

The US has launched two additional air strikes against militants from the Islamic State (IS) group in northern Iraq, the Pentagon has said.

US drones and Navy fighter jets attacked targets near the Kurdish city of Irbil – a similar location to the first strike earlier on Friday.

The Sunni Muslim group IS has taken control of swathes of Iraq and Syria.

Tens of thousands of people from minority groups have fled their homes due to the militants’ advance.

IS, formerly known as Isis, has also seized Iraq’s largest dam.

These air strikes are the first time the US has been directly involved in a military operation in Iraq since American troops withdrew in late 2011.

Convoy targeted

In the second wave of strikes, US drones destroyed a mortar position and killed a group of militants, the Pentagon said. [source]
