House Church…

As you all probably know, I love Jacob Prasch’s teaching and have found him to be biblically discerning if somewhat challenging. I have often heard him say that the last days church will resemble the first biblical church found in Acts and the Epistles.

Increasingly we have many denominations starting up and we have massive buildings that are called churches. But is that really church as the bible outlines it? As more and more main stream institutionalised churches are heading down the ecumenical path of interfaith union, what will happen to those who don’t want to go down that path because they don’t want to be unequally yoked? Are we fast approaching a church age that resembles the first biblical church? Are we going to be meeting in secret because of persecution from those within and without?

Here are some verses that outlines the very first house churches…

Rom 16:5  and salute the church that is in their house. Salute Epaenetus my beloved, who is the first-fruits of Asia unto Christ.

1Co 16:19  The churches of Asia salute you. Aquila and Prisca salute you much in the Lord, with the church that is in their house.

Col 4:15  Salute the brethren that are in Laodicea, and Nymphas, and the church that is in their house.

Phm 1:2  and to Apphia our sister, and to Archippus our fellow-soldier, and to the church in thy house:

Today Pastor Dave Royle has shared with his friends on facebook a thought provoking youtube about house church that  you may find interesting, if not challenging. If the last days church is to resemble the first church that is outlined in the bible what should that church look like? How should it work as a body of believers? Who is in charge and how is that person held accountable?

Perhaps this youtube may give you the answer…

  1. We certainly seem to be heading in that direction. I see this is going to be a series *rubs hands together*. As always, very timely Vee. Thank you!

  2. Thanks Vee for the video. I will be sharing it with a mailing list I have of others who have shown an interest or concern with this very topic.

Me and my family have been out of the organized church for about six years, and I have been a virtual lone voice trying to get others to see where the organized church is leading, and where it has already led. The response has been mostly negative. Even other “watchmen” are still blinded to Spirit’s desire to have the Body of Christ separated and purified from the open adultery of institutionalized Christianity.

    Thanks again,

    • I hear what you are saying Steve. I have just read a few more things on this House Church thing. It says that the Church was meant to spread out sideways and across nations. I found that interesting….

Most churches of today are simply too big to provide real fellowship.
They have too often become “fellowships without fellowship.” The
New Testament Church was a mass of small groups, typically
between 10 and 15 people. It grew not upward into big congregations
between 20 and 300 people filling a cathedral and making real,
mutual communication improbable. Instead, it multiplied “sideward”
-like organic cells-once these groups reached around 15-20 people.
Then, if possible, it drew all the Christians together into citywide
celebrations, as with Solomon’s Temple court in Jerusalem. The
traditional congregational church as we know it is, statistically
speaking, neither big nor beautiful, but rather a sad compromise,
an overgrown house-church and an under-grown celebration, often
      missing the dynamics of both.</i.

      • Vee,

For most who come out of the institution it will take a severe act of obedience; a real test of their resolve to follow the Spirits leading. It is the best thing that has ever happened to me during my walk with the Lord. I say the “best thing” but it has been painful and lonely. At times I could not understand why God would call me out just to leave me stranded; and this is the message I hear from many others who have did likewise. A characteristic I have discovered of Father is that He is not One to be trifled with. Father means business, and will test and re-test who we are allied with, and if we have true faith.

Very many are beginning to come out now; it truly is a great moving for those who have had the scales removed and see who and what the institution consist of.

Compared to the last five or six years the last few months has produced a watershed, with Spirit filled Christians being moved into this stream and flow. There is definitely something being prepared and the Holy Spirit is moving like I have never experienced in all of my 35 years of Christian life, and it is not man’s way of building, it is just happening, and men cannot stop it.

        Blessings,

  3. We’ve been worshipping at home for about 5 years now. Sadly, we don’t know of any other people who are like-minded, so it’s just our family. We’ve searched for a church for years, off and on. Very tiring. I’ve grown terribly pessimistic, and dread the day when hubby wants to resume the search yet again (he brought it up again just the other day…).

Even so, I know there are countless people who are in the same boat, and have suffered far worse church experiences than we *ever* did. Three blogging friends are without a church home. Unfortunately, we are scattered far abroad, but I’m so thankful for this technology, where we can connect and fellowship. Amazing days!

    • I am in the same boat as you Pearl. I really do relate to what you are saying. Perhaps though, this is just the start of something that God wants for His body. Some people are calling this House church movement a third reformation! It is a pre-persecuted model for the church. It resembles the earliest church before it became institutionalized!

      • Amen, Vee. I couldn’t agree with you more. It’s kind of exciting, isn’t it? I feel like we’re in the calm before a storm. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not praying for trials and tribulation (I’m a total wimp). But I do know HE knows what we need to keep the fires burning. Now more than ever, we ought to keep our gaze fast upon Him ALONE.

  4. Good morning. Thank you for bringing this to the forefront. So much of what passes for “church” today is little more than a form of godliness held together by traditions of men and philosophies. I recently read a post (I can’t remember where at the moment) that discussed the subject of “seeker-sensitive” churches. These are places where the blood of Jesus is never mentioned, nor do they talk about sin. It’s all about relationships and bettering ones self in this world. The apostasy of this age is beyond astonishing.

This You Tube addresses some things that have been on my heart for a while, although I’ve not known quite how to express them. The general consensus of the age is that, after one is born of the Spirit, they join up with a church, take on a denominational name tag, join the choir, engage in church functions, and what have you. In other words, go with the flow and don’t rock the boat.

The church found in scripture is vastly different from this as is discussed in this clip. In these final days, however, there is a remnant church. It won’t be found in a glass cathedral or a building the size of a stadium. It will be found in small groupings where those who have forsaken all to follow Jesus gather in his name.

Thanks for bringing forth this clip. Blessings always in Jesus name.

  5. Vee,
I’m not sure if you are aware but there is a small but growing network of house churches in Adelaide (I live in the E / NE are but there are groups meeting in lots of areas) I have not gone to an ‘institutional’ church for about 3 years now and don’t miss it at all! Finding the ‘church that Jesus began’ has been my passion for some time now, and I love what Watchman Nee has to say about the ‘church in the city.’
There are lots of house church specific sites around, but check out http://www.oikos.org.au/ and

This is an Australian ministry specifically connecting and resourcing Aussie house churches.

    God bless
