As the night approaches…

…and in various places there will be famines and earthquakes."-Matt 24:7

Two major earthquakes recently. One in Japan and the other in Chile. We must remember that as the time of the Lord approaches then the warnings that Jesus spoke about in Matthew 24 will come to pass. We must be praying as well as keeping watch as the hour draws near.

What else can we expect as we approach the Day of the Lord? One verse which should really challenge us into spreading the gospel with our friends and family members is this one:

"We must work the works of Him who sent Me as long as it is day; night is coming when no one can work. John 9:4

(2) The works of Christ are is it were a light, which enlighten the darkness of the world.

(b) By "day" is meant the light, that is, the enlightening doctrine of the heavenly truth: and by night is meant the darkness which comes by the obscurity of the same doctrine. [Geneva]

You may wonder what the night has to do with the Lord’s coming?

“For you yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so comes as a thief in the night.” 1 Thessalonians 5:2jacob_ wrestling_ with_ the_ angel_ 1855_XX_granger_collecti

Now remember, Jacob wrestled all night with the Angel of the Lord until he saw his face. The night is the most common metaphor in biblical typology for the Great Tribulation. “Watchmen, watchmen, how far is the night? Is He coming in the second watch of the night, or the third? He is coming life a thief in the night. Work while you have the light; night will come when no man will work. Jacob wrestled till the end of the night. [source]

Isa 55:6  "Seek the LORD while he may be found; call upon him while he is near

While he may be found – It is implied here:
1. That God may now be found.
2. That the time will come when it will be impossible to obtain his favor.
The leading thought is, that under the Messiah the offer of salvation will be made to people fully and freely. But the period will come when it will be withdrawn. [Albert Barnes]

As we approach the night and see these things unfold we are reminded that we must seek the Lord. These times are warnings to us that time is short.

When the night comes, it will be harder for people to work. It will be harder to recognise the Saviour. [Matthew 14:25]

We must continue to persevere in telling the Truth about Jesus and how it is He who offers salvation to the Jews and Gentiles. Remember that we are children of light and that darkness should not overcome us.

1Th 5:4  But you are not in darkness, brothers, for that day to surprise you like a thief.
1Th 5:5  For you are all children of light, children of the day. We are not of the night or of the darkness.
1Th 5:6  So then let us not sleep, as others do, but let us keep awake and be sober.
1Th 5:7  For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, are drunk at night.
1Th 5:8  But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, having put on the breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet the hope of salvation.
1Th 5:9  For God has not destined us for wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ,
1Th 5:10  who died for us so that whether we are awake or asleep we might live with him.
1Th 5:11  Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.

It’s uplifting to know that others are hearing the same things. The Lord has been impressing this concept on me using 1 Samuel 8. Particularly, I think America, like the Israelites, has rejected God and wants a king, and God is giving us one. When the results of their king are manifested, and they decide that God wasn’t so bad after all, it will be too late.

“Then you will cry out in that day because of your king whom you have chosen for yourselves, but the LORD will not answer you in that day.”
    (1 Samuel 8:18)

I think that you are right on about 1 Samuel 8. I didn’t even think about that part of the bible and how it relates to the world situation now, thanks for bringing it up.

    • Thanks Stuart… for some strange reason your comment was considered spam! Oh well, I found it and all is well with the living journey blog once more.

I have a new pc laptop now and am in the process of downloading my favourite tools which help me to blog more efficiently. The first thing to do was down load e-sword. I can’t live without e-sword on my pc. Do you use it? It’s a free bible software that includes concordance, dictionaries and commentaries. It’s something I use every day.

      Take care my friend
